Kayak Bass Straight to End Slavery

Kayak Bass Straight to End Slavery

THE JOURNEY

Our proposed route across the Bass Straight
Weather permitting we hope to be paddling off from Tidal River, Wilsons Promontory, VIC on the 11th Jan. Our journey will take around 3 weeks and cover approx. 400km of open ocean and remote islands and hopefully finish at Musselroe Bay, NE Tasmania. We are aiming for 7-8 paddling days which will mean an average distance of approx. 50km a day and have allowed up to 10 days for bad weather during which we will have to sit it out on islands.

We are travelling unsupported so will carry over 40kg of gear each, including 20lt of water, 20 days of dehydrated food and safety gear including EPIRBS, VHF radios, GPS, electric pumps and solar panels. Fully packed our boats will weigh around 100kg. The sea kayaks we will use are two double Eco Niizh and a single Mirage 580, all of which have been lent to us by Canoeing Down Under

Even with the latest predictions and mapping systems, paddling off the mainland with nothing to aim at except the big blue ocean still fills us with some fear
